Pulse rated resistors provide an improvement for design engineers with pulse power requirements

RALEIGH, NC (May 1, 2007) – Stackpole Electronics, Inc. announces the RPC series of surge withstanding SMD resistors as a better solution than melf type resistors for applications with pulse requirements. The RPC series is a thick film SMD chip resistor with improved surge handling characteristics over standard commercial thick film chips as well as SMD melf resistor types.

In the past, many design engineers chose SMD melf resistors because of their relatively low cost and their higher pulse withstanding capability. For a given resistor footprint, the cylindrical shape of the melf provides more surface area for resistor as compared to the equivalent size SMD thick film flat chip. This increased amount of resistor material leads to better pulse power handling. The RPC series has no calibration trim, thereby improving the pulse handling capability. The RPC provides a part that is not only significantly better than standard resistor chips, but also better than the equivalent footprint melf resistors. In fact, the RPC pulse performance is typically between 2 to 5 times better than that of the equivalent size melf.

The RPC is an ideal choice for various types of input or output power / current limiting requirements. Switch mode power supplies and motor controls will frequently need this type of current limiting device. The small size and low price also make it very popular with a variety of portable electronics including metering and diagnostic equipment, medical devices, as well as industrial controls, and plasma and LCD video monitors.

The RPC series is available in sizes 0805 through 2512, in values from .27 through 22M, and in tolerances as low as 5 %. Packaging is standard 7” tape and reel, 5000 pcs each for 0805 and 1206, and 4000 pcs for the larger sizes. Pricing is volume dependent but ranges from $50 per thousand for 0805 20% tolerances up to $175 per thousand for 2512 5% product.
