THE HPC SERIES FROM STACKPOLE OFFERS HIGH PULSE WITHSTANDING IN A 5 WATT SMD RESISTOR

RALEIGH, NC (Jan. 20, 2010) – The HPC series from Stackpole is a compact surface mount 5 watt resistor. The HPC incorporates 4 parallel thick film chip resistor elements to accommodate the higher power handling and the anodized heat sink allows for increased heat dissipation into the ambient air. These parallel resistance elements allow the HPC to withstand up to 2500 watts for pulse durations of 100 microseconds or less. This pulse withstanding makes it attractive for industrial machinery and controls, and power supplies of many different varieties and power levels.

The HPC is an extremely thermally efficient surface mount 5 watt resistor. Many other high power SMD devices force the PCB to dissipate a more significant amount of heat, which places restrictions on board design, layout, and nearby component selection. The HPC dissipates most of its heat through the aluminum heat sink in to the ambient air. In addition the design of the HPC suspends the thick film resistance elements above the board, further minimizing the thermal effect on the PCB. The heat sink is also designed to allow up to 12.5 watts of continuous power if there is air movement across the board.

Kory Schroeder, Stackpole’s Director of Marketing commented “No other resistor currently available can match the pulse withstanding and power handling of the HPC resistor in a physical package size of .5 inches square.” He continued, “The HPC offers a single device solution to applications using multiple SMD chips or molded wirewounds and offers a solution to replace large 5 watt axial leaded devices which may be one of the last through-hole devices on a given circuit board.”

Pricing for the HPC varies with resistance value and tolerance and ranges from $1.20 to $1.70 each in full reel quantities. Contact Stackpole for volume pricing. The HPC series is available in standard tape and reel packaging in 200 pcs quantities and in bulk. Common values are in stock at Digi-key.
