Stackpole's SM Series Ideal Replacements For Large Case Size Ceramic Chips

RALEIGH, NC (May 25, 2010) - The SM Series from Stackpole is a molded surface mount wirewound resistor with compliant terminations. This technology and lead design offer a significant advantage over large case size ceramic chips in that they are far more robust. Large case size chips are susceptible to cracking and solder joint failure due to differences in thermal expansion properties of the ceramic chips and the PCB's on which they are mounted. Conversely, the compliant termination of the SM Series is able to flex with the board and shows very little resistance shift due to temperature cycling after more than 3,000 cycles. These terminations make the SM Series a very popular product for automotive and commercial vehicle under the hood applications such as engine control modules, as well as a wide variety of industrial power and control applications. The SM Series can be manufactured with Ayrton Perry non-inductive windings to reduce inductance and can be customized with a variety of different fusing characteristics.

The SM Series is available in 1, 2, 3, and 4 watt sizes, in resistance values ranging from 0.01 ohms up to 5K ohms. Standard TCR's range from 20 ppm to 100 ppm depending on resistance value and tolerances from 0.1% up to 5% are also standard. This series is available in standard tape and reel packaging and is RoHS compliant. Pricing varies with size, tolerance and resistance value, and ranges from $0.35 to $2.00 each in full reel quantities. With 41 different part numbers available through Digi-key, additional stock is available directly from Stackpole. Contact Stackpole or one of our franchised distributors for volume pricing.
